If I have diverticulitis, do I really need to stay away from popcorn nuts and seeds?

Many of us have tiny pouches that protrude from the lower intestine’s lining as we become older. We refer to the pouches as diverticula. Diverticulosis is the term for the illness.

Occasionally, one of the diverticula becomes infected. This frequently results in fever and stomach pain. Diverticulitis is what that is.

A common misconception for many years was that a big seed, popcorn, or nut might become lodged in the diverticula’s aperture. and that diverticulitis could result from this.

However, a study that tested this theory produced some unexpected findings. Over 47,000 males between the ages of 40 and 75 monitored their dietary consumption for 18 years. At the beginning of the research, none had diverticulosis.

In fact, diverticulitis was less common in men who consumed more popcorn and almonds. JAMA published the study’s findings.

The bowel must rest during a diverticulitis episode. Thus, I advise a low-fiber diet throughout this period. However, after it is finished, eating a diet high in fiber and staying hydrated might help stop new pouches from developing.

A Mediterranean-style diet is a good one to follow. It has an abundance of whole grains, fruits, and veggies. Enjoy the popcorn and nuts!
